Tales of Argosa Last Days!

HOLY COW – Tales of Argosa has well & truly funded !!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

It’s so energizing to see a project like this confirmed by my peers and I’m SUPER PUMPED to get the new art rolling in, finalise the extra pages, and get this bad boy to the printers!!

As I type this we’ve already cracked three stretch goals (GM Screen, plus two adventures), and we’re on the cusp of VTT Support! (ohhh yessiree, I’m in talks with High Technomancer Dab about a Foundry module already – hope to share more about that very soon :DD)

If you’re on the fence, this campaign does include two oracles – the Deck of Signs and Consult the Bones Dice (with bonus Activity die) – the latter of which are a bulk order through Q Workshop – if you want the coloured dice, this is the last chance to grab them!

Naturally I’ve been working steadily on the master file this month, with various rules tweaks and extra material… including revised Mass Battle rules (focusing on the “spotlight” method from LFG Deluxe) and Naval Combat (streamlined resolution, simpler ships, and moving more quickly to boarding). Playtesting these variants right now, but I expect to release them to Backers for feedback very shortly as Playtest PDF v6 πŸ˜€

Includes details of the opulent Central Spire, the Prosperity Ring, diverse Midtown Terrace, industrious Commons Edge, struggling Outskirts Ward, the destitute Fringe Frontier, and dark underbelly known as the Shadow Vein. Influential figures such as the Mayor and dominant CEOs are also covered, along with twenty four plot hooks for adventures!

  1. I mentioned this back when you first posted the spells and had been meaning to further comment, but life (as it often does) got in the way. When you have a small(-ish), level-less list of spells, it’s of utmost importance that each one has a solid niche. Reading the changelogs, spells haven’t really changed since the initial draft, but I don’t think they’re quite there yet.

For example Brain Burst is single target, fixed damage and has a built in downside. At level 1 it certainly might be worth the gamble for 3d8 (no save). At level 3? You can probably cast one of the other offensive spells and catch 2 targets in the AoE for more effect. Level 5? Looking pretty bad even if there is only a single target for the AoE spells to hit. Anything beyond that? You’re never casting this again.

Hex of Volcanic Steel suffers from a similar problem of a fixed effect. At low level, 1d8 damage might be a deterrent to holding onto an item (and the potentially long, if random, duration helps a bit). At high level, ignoring the damage is more of an option and comparatively you’d be much better off just casting Hellblast for more damage in an instant than you’re ever likely to get out of Hex over its duration.

Generally I’d take a good long look at spells with fixed effects that don’t scale to ensure they remain worth it compared to things that do (summoning a skeleton at level 1 is cool, at level 6 it’s probably not worth the spell use). Not all spells need scaling (or rather, some spells scale inherently by what they do…), but definitely more than those that have scaling now.

    1. Thanks very much for the feedback and I agree about each spell needing its niche. I think Brain Burst is fine for various reasons, but agree Hex of Volcanic Steel could use a tweak. If you have any other suggestions by all means let me know!
