July Update – Final Tales of Argosa PDF

Greetings one and all, I hope you are well!

Final ToA PDF now available

The big news is the final Tales of Argosa PDF is now available to Backers. Well I say final… but experience tells me there will be a few residual typos! But hopefully those will be minimal and corrected prior to 31 July when the pre-order page closes. For those who may be interested, the PDF includes the Creative Commons licence on the credits page (over the last few weeks we did a sweep for any left over OGL material, and removed such)If you missed the KS, the Pre-Order Store closes on 31 July 2024.

Now here’s some sweet sweet art from Matt Morrow! Matt is absolutely one of my fav artists to work with – highly professional, sticks to the brief, speedy, and very reasonable rates – if you need art for your next project I can’t recommend Matt highly enough.

On reflection I decided I wanted a darker tone for the “Healing & Recovery” spread, so I commissioned Jeff Koch to create a third variant of his Campfire piece. I’m sure you’ll agree it turned out very nice indeed :DD

There’s been a few rules tweaks since v7, but not many:

  • Rage p.21 When using the first rage option, the Barbarian automatically rerolls any fumbled attacks.
  • Shields p.61 Removed the line about shields with heavy armour negate Dex bonus to AC.
  • Wodon p.28 Cultists may roll against Will for General Lore checks.
  • Potion Brewing p.123 on a fail the GM may rule that the potion is made, but also causes Toxin Trauma when used.
  • Gear p.56-57 some reformatting to make these two pages neater.

As with v7 many of these tweaks came about as a result of playtesting discussion on the Low Fantasy Gaming Discord – thank you so much for your valuable input!

Currently Working on…

With the ToA PDF complete I’ve ordered the latest hard cover proof which will arrive in August. My priorities for end of July will be (i) GM Screen, (ii) Affinity Publisher Template, and (iii) Adventure Framework #69 House of Crows (stretch goal).

ToA Variant Character Sheets

simplified character sheet (form fillable and not, with white and parchment backgrounds) is now available. I basically decluttered the Equipment section 😉

  1. Long time DM looking for an alternate low magic OSR setting and have read a lot about the LFG system. My question is, what’s the difference between the new Tales of Argosa and the Low Fantasy Deluxe edition gaming system? For someone starting out with this system, what is the best entry point?

    1. I consider Tales of Argosa an improvement over LFG and recommend starting with ToA. Main differences in ToA: flatter hp curve (approx 10-40 hp over 9 levels), less rerolls at higher level, 9th level max, 1 rescue per adventure, dead check is 10 + will/con mod not a Con check, only 1 player rolls for Init each round (side based, rotate through the PCs), Trauma tables for many Nat 19 effects, simplified short rests (always 2 Will checks), leveless spells and roll to cast, increased risk of DDM effects (generally d8-d12 instead of d20 roll, except for magic items which remain d20), pulled a lot of the Downtime activities from LFG Companion into the core book, range bands, increased emphasis on reaction rolls/morale, Hexploration procedures, default XP leveling, oracles (yes/no dice and open question card deck). Hope this helps 😀
